Forest Research Officer | Natural Resources Canada - Canadian Forest Service
My name is Greg Verkaik and I'm a Forest Research Officer with the Canadian Forest Service (Natural Resources Canada). I'm part of the Carbon Accounting Team where we are studying the movement of carbon through forest ecosystems, particularly in relation to fire impacts, to improve national forest carbon modelling and accounting.
I'm also a part-time PhD Candidate in the McMaster Ecohydrology Lab, where I research boreal peatland ecohydrology in the context of wildfire disturbance. I completed my BSc (Honours) in Biology and Environmental Sciences and my MSc in Earth and Environmental Sciences at McMaster University.
I utilize field, remote sensing, and modelling techniques to assess when peatlands are vulnerable to smouldering combustion prior to fire and to study peatland burn severity and hydrological impacts after fire. I do this research across a spectrum of pristine, fuel treated, and anthropogenically disturbed peatlands in Canada's Boreal Forest.
